My AI Gym Bro: Building a Personal OpenClaw Coach

TL;DR: A local OpenClaw server is incredibly powerful for agency automation, but its utility extends to personal lifestyle management as well. We created a custom AI subagent to act as a digital personal trainer. Communicating exclusively through Slack, the AI guides daily workouts, tracks progressive overload, and logs fitness data directly into Google Sheets—though it required strict prompting to stop it from recommending the wrong gym equipment.

I built an enterprise-grade artificial intelligence server to automate my entire agency, and then I used it to tell me how much to bench press.

Over the last ten chapters of the OpenClaw Diaries, we have documented the grueling, highly technical, and incredibly rewarding process of building a digital workforce. We installed OpenClaw on a local Mac Mini, managed Claude API costs, integrated HighLevel CRM webhooks, and automated our sales proposals.

We built an absolute machine of a business. But the inherent beauty of operating your own local AI server is that you completely own the brain. The architecture is not locked behind a SaaS paywall restricted to corporate use cases.

I decided to step outside the office, leverage the infrastructure we had already built, and create a custom AI Gym Bro to manage my personal fitness.

The Slack Workout Workflow

To make a digital personal trainer viable, the interface had to be frictionless. I did not want to carry a notebook around the gym or navigate a clunky, ad-filled fitness app.

Because we had already established secure webhooks in a previous episode, I was able to connect this new fitness subagent directly to my Slack workspace. The workflow is incredibly intuitive. When I walk into the gym in the morning, I pull up the Slack app on my smartphone and simply tell the AI I am ready to begin.

The Orchestrator agent accesses my historical data and generates the day’s routine. It literally walks me through the workout, exercise by exercise. It tells me what to lift and what my target rep range is. While I am sitting on the bench sweating between sets, I text the bot back with the exact weight I moved and how many reps I achieved.

Autopilot Progressive Overload

Logging the data is only half the equation; the AI also acts as a data analyst.

The subagent takes those texted numbers, calculates my progressive overload, and autonomously logs everything into a private, formatted Google Sheet. It tracks my growth over time, adjusting my required weight for the next session to ensure I am constantly pushing my limits.

It is the ultimate accountable workout partner, operating entirely in the background. But getting the AI to understand my specific routine required some aggressive fine-tuning.

Arguing with the Server

In the early days of this experiment, we ran into some hilarious glitches.

Large Language Models are trained on vast amounts of internet data. When you ask an AI for a workout routine, it inherently assumes you have access to a massive, fully equipped commercial fitness center.

It kept recommending elaborate, multi-step cable machine exercises. However, I prefer a more functional approach to fitness and rely heavily on kettlebells. Because of the AI’s stubborn memory settings and default assumptions, I practically had to argue with my own server on Slack. I had to continually correct it, demanding it stop giving me cable workouts and stick to the equipment I actually had available.

Eventually, I had to hard-code my available gym equipment directly into the subagent’s system prompt. Once I locked in those parameters and convinced it to stick to the kettlebells, it became the perfect digital coach.

The End of the Diaries

And that wraps up the OpenClaw Diaries.

We started with a blank Mac Mini and a lot of influencer hype. We ended up with a highly customized, autonomous digital brain that researches our leads, closes our deals, cleans its own memory, and tracks our deadlifts.

Building a local AI server is not easy, but it is the most impactful technology investment you can make for your agency and your life.
